Genealogical seminar set in Monroeville Sat., Feb. 3

There will be a Genealogical Seminar at the Old Monroe County Courthouse in Monroeville Saturday, Feb. 3 from 8:30 until 3 p.m.

The topic will be "Early Days in Alabama: Territorial Settlement through Antebellum Days."

Session 1 will be the settlers: your ancestors, immigrants and native Americans (includes an overview of resources and repositories.

Session 2 will be The Land: Mapping the area, acquiring the land and documenting the land.

Session 3 will be The Wars: Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Indian Wars and Mexican Wars. Session 4 will be The Politics: From territory to territory, from territory to statehood, documenting the settlers.

Research sources including early maps, military records, land records, early census records, Panton, Leslie papers and trading post records, Benjamin Hawkins papers, Spanish, French and English records and influence and Indian records will all be discussed.

The presenter will be Elizabeth C. Wells, B.A., M.A., M.L.S., Special Collection Libratian, Samford University, Birmingham. Mrs. Wells is active in the genealogical and historical communities and has served as past president of the Alabama Genealogical Society, the Birmingham Genealogical Society and is a founder and past president of the Society of Alabama Archivists.

Registration will be at 8:30-9 a.m. for check-in and coffee. There will be a presentation from 9 until 11:30 a.m. and lunch on your own will be from 11:30 until 12:30 and the presentation will be from 12:30 until 3 p.m. Registration fee will be $20 to be made payable to the Monroe County Heritage Museums, Attn: Shannon Hall-Jones- Genealogical Seminar, P.O.
