Ruben Studdard leading charge to 'Scale Back'

Grove Hill Memorial Hospital joined the 2003 American Idol, Ruben Studdard, in asking Alabamians to lose 10 million pounds over the next eight weeks. "That's basically 10 pounds per person for every person in Alabama that is estimated to be obese," said Doug Sewell, administrator of Grove Hill Memorial Hospital.

"Currently, Alabama ranks as the second most obese state in the nation, and this extra weight can be a huge factor in increasing the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other life-altering conditions. We just want to do our part in encouraging those in our community to start the New Year off right by making some healthy lifestyle changes."

Studdard, who has recently had his own success in getting healthy, has agreed to champion this effort and to encourage people statewide to form teams of three to five people and compete for a grand prize of $1,000 per person for the team in the state that has the highest percentage weight loss. "I recently realized that, while I am happy with who I am, my life could benefit by making some healthy lifestyle changes," said Studdard. My personal weight loss and exercise program has really worked, and I am excited about being able to share my journey with others. If I can lose nearly 100 pounds in six months, I truly believe that others can be as successful in reaching their goals."

In our area, people can contact Cindy Greene, RN at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital at 251-275-3191 Ext. 201. Leave a message if sent to the voicemail and you will be reached and given information about the campaign and sign up.

Grove Hill Memorial Hospital will host the area kickoff on Jan. 18 at 12 p.m. in front of the hospital. Team members will be given balloons to be released as a symbol of the release of any obstacles to a healthier lifestyle and improved quality of life. The public should look for the red notes attached to the balloons. Returned notes will be placed in a drawing for a free three-month membership to HealthActions in Jackson.

Scale Back Alabama is being sponsored by Alabama's hospitals, the Alabama Department of Public Health and Barber Dairies.
