Sports Scene
Most SEC football fans had an inkling that the Gators could beat the top-ranked Buckeyes, but no knew they could hang almost a half-a-hundred in doing so. I think there were two teams in the SEC that could have done that. Both Florida and LSU had strong teams. The Bayou Bengal Tigers thoroughly embarrassed Notre Dame, but at least the Irish offense was able to do more than Ohio State's. Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith looked lost against the Florida pressure. Looking at the bowl games though, it was clear that the best of the bunch was the Fiesta Bowl and Boise State's improbable win over the Oklahoma Sooners. The Broncos left no plays unused in the playbook as they finished 13-0, the only school in Division I to do so. But now the bowls are over and so is football season. I don't count professional sports, especially when they give a post-season award to someone who was suspended four games for using steroids. There lies the problem in sports. We reward folks who break the rules. Bigger news than the governor's election The hiring of Nick Saban as the new coach at the University of Alabama created more buzz than any political race in recent memory. The school had created a rift in the way they handled the firing of former coach Mike Shula. Most folks either agreed with the timing or they felt the man should have been given more time. Either way Saban is now the man in charge in Tuscaloosa. Embattled athletics director Mal Moore silenced all of his critics with this hire. The day leading up to the announcement was almost comical when you look at all of the rumors that were circulating on when the deal would be done. There were no scenarios left untouched on how much money Saban would be paid to coach the Crimson Tide. In the end it is a king's ransom of $32 million over eight years. In fact if he leads Bama to the national championship game next year he could make about $4.8 million. That is not a bad payday. At some point the ceiling will be reached. I am not sure when that will be, and right or wrong, it is the way things are. I don't think 92,000 people will shell out $45 a head to see someone conjugate a sentence. But for sports we will pay it, no matter what. One thing I see in the hiring of Saban is this...the return to the great football of the 1960's and 70's. The time when USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Alabama ruled the land with an iron fist, each school has the coach in place to make it happen and that could be fun to see again. Sorry Auburn fans, that is just the way I see it. Basketball season in full swing The area high school basketball season is just one month from the end. Can you believe that? It seems as though they just got started and now the area tourneys are less than a month away. In the next few weeks teams will be jockeying for seeding position in the hopes of making the playoffs.
Good luck teams. That's all folks.........
