Remembering first time in the woods
Ross Wood Sports Editor

While taking pictures at the Clarke Prep School deer hunt this past weekend I thought back to the first time I went hunting. Not the first time I killed a deer mind you...no the first time I went into the woods to try and kill something.

Ironically it is a much better story, one that is truly more memorable.

I am not sure how old I was but I do remember getting a .410 shotgun for Christmas that year.

That day was also one of the coldest that I can ever remember as well. Or at least that is what I was told. Because I never got cold in the woods.

I am not sure how much clothing my mother put on me that morning. I really can not tell you that.

But I do know that my arms were sticking straight out. You could have jumped off a house onto one of my arms, trying to force it down and you would have sprung back as though hitting a diving board.

Actually it was something akin to a stick man that kids draw, except my arms were straight out.

If you have ever seen the movie "A Christmas Story" and remember Ralphie's brother on the way to school, then you have an idea.

My legs were so stiff that I had to do that sideways walk where I teetered back and forth. No bend in the knees whatsoever. None.

The attempt at getting in the truck was even funnier. It was kinda like jumping from my toes while Daddy gave me a big shove. Not a pretty picture to say the least.

All this time, considering I couldn't move any part of my body, I was wondering how I would be able to pull the trigger should something come near.

Not that it really mattered. It was even too cold for deer to move.

Luckily I never fell down that morning. There would have been no way to get up by myself and forget having to go to the bathroom. There would have been no time to get everything off before I had made an accident.

I got lucky in both regards. And that was also the last time I let anyone else determine what I was going to wear when going hunting.

That's all folks......
