Tombigbee erosion meet in Livingston The eighth Clean Water Partnership Stakeholders meeting, to study stream bank erosion on the lower Tombigbee River basin, will be held at the University of West Alabama Environmental Training Center in Livingston Monday, Jan. 29 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. The meeting's purpose is to review a draft plan of action based on seven meetings previously held. Interested individuals and entities may review the plan and offer input. Questions and suggestions are solicited, according to facilitator Wade Riggs. Major issues to be addressed in the action plan include (1) control of river traffic (barges and yachts), (2) water level management, (3) location of problem areas and commonalities (soils, river geomorphology), (4) funding sources for private or Corps of Engineers improvements, (5) Best Management Practices to prevent and correct erosion. Committees for each of the above have been set up but some members are still needed. Contact Riggs if you are interested. Specific problem areas along the river have been determined but anyone who knows of any not listed are urged to share that information also. Riggs can be contacted at wwriggs@bellsouth.net, cell 205-394-2513 or fax 205-339- 1334.
The UWA Environmental Training Center is located off of Highway 28 East. Take Country Club Drive, go about three quarters of a mile and take the first paved road to the left. The road goes between two brick pillars. At the top of the hill the pavement will end. Bear right on a slag road and you will find the training center.
