Replacing Tutwiler

And speaking of progress, we must comment on Thomasville Mayor Sheldon Day's efforts to secure a new women's prison facility for the Thomasville area.

Word is out that the aged and deteroriating Tutwlier Prison for Women in Wetumpka must be replaced. Prison Commissioner Richard Allen has said he would like to see a new facility by as early as 2008.

Some people may be skittish of a prison but Mayor Day says that a properly run facility can be an asset for the community. A 2,000-inmate prison would provide 300 plus state jobs and could possibly spawn several support businesses as well to supply the prison.

Four municipalities- Thomasville, Livingston, Gordo and Brundidge are supposedly vying for the prison.

We'd put our money on Thomasville and Mayor Day. Partly because of the recent opening of a LIFE Tech Pardons and Paroles Center in Thomasville, which has put the spotlight on the city with the paroles and prisons systems and partly for Mayor Day's close association with Gov. Bob Riley, Prison Commissioner Allen and others at the state level.
