ASCC to host annual career fair Jan. 25-26

Alabama Southern will host the Third Annual Advanced Technology/Technical Career Fair on Thursday, Jan. 25 from 8 a.m. -2 p.m. and on Friday, Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. -1 p.m. on the Thomasville campus. Because of increased interest and need the career fair will now take on a two-day format in order to accommodate students more affectively.

This change will allow students more time on campus to talk with Alabama Southern faculty and staff, industry representatives, and to tour our lab facilities. In addition tours for welding, cosmetology and business technology have been added to the agenda so that students who are not interested in advanced technology programs may also be served accordingly. There will also be locations for students who are interested in university transfer and nursing to talk with faculty and staff.

Alabama Southern will be hosting the career fair in conjunction with industries involved in the Alabama Southern Industry Alliance for a Technologically Advanced Workforce. Those industries include Alabama River Pulp, Boise, Temple-Inland, Louisiana Pacific, Weyerhaeuser, Rock- Tenn, Westervelt and Olin.

Students have the opportunity to tour the advanced technology labs on the Thomasville campus, as well as meet with representatives from industries involved in the Alliance.

Alliance scholarship applications will be available during the career fair as well as information about the Alliance members.

Alliance scholarships are offered annually on a competitive basis and provide tuition, books and supplies. The scholarship evaluation process will consist of a committee review of the application package, including references and resume.

Alabama Southern Community College's Industry Alliance for a Technologically Advanced Workforce was recently selected in 2006 as one of the 10 Bellwether Finalists in the Workforce Development category for the National Bellwether Awards.

In 1999, the American Chemical Society cited Alabama Southern as having one of the top six industry/education alliances in the United States. And in 2004, the National Science Foundation designated Alabama Southern as the National Center for Pulp and Paper Technology Training, one of only 14 national centers in the nation and the only rural national center in the United States.
