Legislative pay raise

The Alabama Legislature had hardly convened for its organizational session before efforts started circulating for a pay raise for legislators.

One of the hikes that was promoted in the State Senate would have boosted the current $31,000 or so salary by about $18,000- a 58 percent increase.

That is both outrageous and ridiculous.

Legislators' pay has not seen an increase in years so we could probably support a modest 3, 4 or 5 percent increase. But 58 percent? No way!

The issue is likely to come up again when the Regular Session starts in March.

The Senate has made it easier to vote in a pay raise or any other controversial vote on only a voice vote with no recording of individual senators' votes.

Both House and Senate members need to go on the record as to any vote they cast for a pay raise for themselves.

And we trust Gov. Bob Riley will veto anything too far out, like a crazy 58 percent increase.
