Purple martins are 'early birds' this year!

Sammy Hutto called from Chance shortly after 5 p.m. Monday to report a purple martin sitting on the power line at his home.

Tuesday morning, Larry Newsom called to report martins in his backyard on the Allen-Walker Road in Helwestern.

Martin sightings are eagerly awaited as a sign of the coming of spring. However, the first birds- called scouts- usually aren't reported until early to mid-February.

Hutto's and Newsom's martins are truly "early birds!"
