Spare a cup, Senator? U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, RTuscaloosa, is making his annual rounds of visiting in southwest Alabama and will be at Gloria's Pour House Cafe in Grove Hill at 10 a.m. Saturday. Alabama's senior senator (in years of service as well as age, he's 72) makes a point of visiting each of Alabama's 67 counties every year and we appreciate it. He's been a good senator and although he's been criticized for "pork legislation" that benefits the state, most of that criticism comes from national watchdog groups. Alabamians are proud to get whatever they can out of Washington and Sen. Shelby offers no apologizes for helping to obtain a few bacon drippings. We urge you to go hear him Saturday. And if you don't have money for a cup of coffee at Gloria's, Sen. Shelby might spring for it. The latest report shows that his political bank account contains a whopping $12 million. That's more than any of the other 49 senators. New York Sen. Hillary Clinton who has announced as a Democratic candidate for president and can transfer her political campaigns to that race has $11 million in her account.
Sen. Shelby says he plans to run for re-election in 2010. His annual visits with constituents- as well as a $12 million bank account- helps to ensure his likely continued re-election.
