Warne Junior Johnson, 21, of Lower Peach Tree and his passengers, Kendrick Andrea Davis, 20, of Grove Hill and Tiketa Champion, 16, of Thomasville, were headed south on Highway 43 in a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu when the vehicle left the road and went into a ravine, striking and wrapping around a tree. According to local law enforcement officers, a truck driver traveling on the highway noticed the car's tail lights in the ravine and called the accident in. Grove Hill Police Officer Woodie Coates went to the scene and at first didn t see the wreckage, but then he noticed a hand waving from the embankment. Apparently Champion had crawled out of the vehicle and up the steep slope. She was Lifeflighted by helicopter ambulance to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile where she is listed in fair condition. Johnson and Davis were pronounced dead at the scene. According to a press release from the Alabama Department of Public Safety, neither of the deceased were wearing seatbelts and speed is believed to be a factor in the accident. Alabama State Trooper Darrell Linder investigated the accident. It was a deadly weekend for accidents on Alabama highways with 11 fatalities reported. Davis and Johnson were two of four to die in southwest Alabama. Cassandra Rivers, 22, of Mt. Vernon was killed in a one-car crash in north Mobile County near the Washington County line early Sunday.
