Grand jury indicts 216 Eighty-eight percent of the cases presented to a recent Clarke County Grand Jury resulted in indictments. Out of 246 cases presented, 216 were indicted. Of those, 182 were felonies and 43 were misdemeanors. Seven cases were continued for further investigation. Aside from their duties regarding criminal indictments, grand jurors are also charged with reviewing county records and properties. They complimented the county's records and officials for the upkeep of county property but detailed several items that they felt needed attention. The list of items included several items in the basement, including a wall in the registrars' office damaged by water and exposed overhead pipes in the Genealogy Room that need to be insulated. Grand Jurors also noted mold in several areas of the basement. Old vending machines on the second floor should be removed and unattended extension cords in the hallways are hazardous, grand jurors observed. There is peeling paint in the district attorney's office and new carpet is needed in the traffic division of the circuit clerk's office. The ceilings in the hallways of the clerk's office and DA's office need repairs. A copy of the U.S. Constitution hanging in the hallway near the courtrooms needs reframing. Inadequate space, inadequate temperature control and a lack of hot water are problems throughout the courthouse. Grand jurors made no mention of the new courthouse addition, which should help with the space problem when it is completed. Grand jurors complimented Sheriff Bobby Moore and his staff but made recommendations for the jail, too. They said the isolation rooms of the jail's infirmary needed cleaning as do the floors of the jail's booking area. A broken window in the exercise area of the jail needs to be repaired. A small table is needed in the break room of the sheriff's office and the door to the jail's storage room should remain closed.
The names of individuals who were indicted will be published beginning next week.
