Tobacco nixed on hospital property
By Kathryn F. Pickard

As of Feb. 1 tobacco users have had to curb their cravings while seeking medical help, or visiting someone who needs it, in Grove Hill.

The offices and surrounding grounds at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital, Grove Hill Healthcare, Doctor's Office LLC, Dr. Champ Bowling, Dr. Clarence Hawkins, The Heart Group and Drs. Hayes and Ingerson are now tobacco free and anyone who refuses to cooperate can be arrested.

"We're following along with other communities, especially the health care community. If you work in the health care community you need to set an example," GHMH Administrator Doug Sewell said.

"People were having to walk through a smoke cloud to get into the hospital. With everything we know about the health problems associated with tobacco use, we needed to be doing our part to prevent it," he added.

Sewell said he had discussed the tobacco ban with Mayor Lamar Hudson, since the town owns the property, and Mayor Hudson agreed. "It's possible we may be seeing more places in town enforcing this ban," Sewell said.
Commissioner Joe Hunt is shown with CCARC's Beverly Garrett and Saundra Nichols after the commission approved a resolution designating March as Mental Retardation Awareness Month. The Jackson-based organization is planning its annual Spring Jubliee for Saturday, March 17.
