Local trooper post to reopen

The old Alabama State Trooper Post in Grove Hill, closed for several years now, will be reopened gradually starting Friday until it is again at full post status.

Major Carey B. Sutton heads the Alabama Highway Patrol Division of the Alabama Department of Public Safety and acknowledged the plans to reopen the office.

Sutton, who grew up in Grove Hill, said the post will again serve troopers and the public in Clarke, Choctaw and Washington counties as part of the Evergreen District.

When the post was closed, reportedly due to budget constraints, the area was transferred to the Mobile and Baldwin Counties District with local troopers working out of the Mobile office. Sutton said the added territory has proven to be too big for that to work effectively.

Plans are to eventually have an office staff and radio communications personnel working out of the Grove Hill office but Sutton said that may take some time.

The old post has not been completely abandoned during its closure; troopers have used it as a stopover while patrolling in the area.
