Useless holidays

The courthouse, the post office and the banks were closed and shuttered Monday. Some students got a day out of school too, but not all.

When the courthouse and the bank are closed in downtown Grove Hill it makes for a quiet day indeed.

It was President's Day. Initially, we celebrated just George Washington's and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays in February, on separate days. Then, we decided to make it one holiday and pay homage to all of the presidents, the greats and not so greats too on the third Monday of the month.

All are deserving to a degree for having led our country at some point in our history. But some aren't as deserving as others.

Wonder how many county, state and federal workers spent the day acknowledging the contributions of our presidents? Wonder how many bank employees did the same?

This is one of the many holidays that benefit only the people who get the day off.

And don't even get us started on the Mardi Gras holiday...taken this past Tuesday in Baldwin and Mobile counties.

We'll wait until we have more space to weigh in on the big hullaboo over the fact that next year's Alabama presidential primary was mistakenly set on Mardi Gras Day. Suffice to say...a drunken and happy bead thrower or catcher may do a better job of picking a good contender for president than a sober, serious citizen.
