'Sonny Gibson Field' remembers man for longtime service to sport
By Kathryn F. Pickard

The 13-14-year-old girl's softball field at S.P. Hudson Park will be named "Sonny Gibson Field" in memory of the late James C. "Sonny" Gibson.

The proposal was presented and approved during Monday night's Grove Hill Town Council meeting.

Gibson's 25 years of service to the youth involved in baseball and softball, including, 17 years as park director, coach, umpire and statistician, were cited in the proposal.

Council members agreed to erect a sign at the field behind home plate.

Radar trailer approved

The purchase of a radar trailer was approved by council members.

According to Grove Hill Police Chief Leo Frazier, the trailers, which sit beside the road and post the speed of oncoming traffic, normally cost about $10,000, but the town had the opportunity to purchase one for $5,000.

In addition to the trailer, council members also agreed to purchase a unit which would keep records of how fast motorists were traveling on that road, which Frazier said would indicate if patrols needed to be stepped up in the area.

The total cost for the trailer and unit is $5,890.

Other business

The town council agreed to use Watermark Designs of Foley for architectural work on the senior nutrition center.

Bids will be taken on a street sweeper.

The purchase of software to utilize the GIS and GPS mapping of the water system and sewer system was approved. Three copies will be purchased, one for the water system, one for the sewer system and one for the town, at a cost of $4,076.

A resolution for the town to maintain landscaping along the bypass was approved.

Council members agreed to make a request for proposals for an auditor. Mayor Hudson reminded town council members that they had not received the 2005 audit yet and he felt it was time to look for a new auditor.

C. J. Arnold, owner of Kel-Ar Consulting, the company presently working on the town's financial record-keeping, reported that a CPA had been brought in to chart the town's accounts and entries for the new fiscal year would be made soon Once those are complete then town council members will begin receiving a financial statement.
