The Clarke County High School Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and held off a feisty comeback by Calhoun as they advance to the state championship tournament with a 68-58 win Saturday at Trojan Arena in Troy.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-6 first quarter lead highlighted by MVP Ben Burroughs knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.

They continued their assault in the second quarter to take a 35-23 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter sixth ranked Calhoun fought back, cutting the lead to 41-38 with 3:26 to play. But that was as close as they would get as Clarke County slammed the door shut in the fourth quarter.

Burroughs led the Bulldogs with 17 points including four 3- point shots. He also had two rebounds and two steals. His brother, Justin Burroughs, added 16 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Deforest Taite, who was named to the all-region team, had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Marlon McConnell came off the bench to score nine key points and pull down five rebounds. Kenneth Kimbrough had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Wednesday the Bulldogs, ranked ninth, (25-4) took on third-ranked Madison Academy (29-6) in the semi-finals in Class 3A at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center.

It is the first time since 1990 when CCHS lost 87-85 to Lanett in double-overtime that they have advanced this far.

Madison Academy beat Crossville 68-53 in Jacksonville this Saturday. They were led by Kerron Johnson with 19 points and Elliott Johnson with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Their 6- 11 center Bawa Muniru was in foul trouble and a factor in the game. But the Mustangs, defending Class 3A champs, played without three players: Austin Doggette, Dante Bowman and Charles Brown. All three are Seventh-Day Adventist and their religion prohibits them from participating in games before sundown on Saturdays.

Greensboro will play secondranked Lauderdale County in the other semi-final game. Greensboro (23-8) beat Aliceville 56-46 while Lauderdale County (29-4) beat Sheffield 63-51.

The championship game is set for Saturday, March 3 at 11 a.m.
