Gators host baseball, softball tourneys

The Clarke Prep School Gators baseball team opened the 2007 baseball season with a pair of wins in the Gator Classic this past weekend in Grove Hill.

On Saturday the Gators beat the Marengo Longhorns 7-5, coming back after being down four runs early.

Heath Bishop went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Clay Furrow had a hit and two RBI. Taylor Becton, Windham Jackson and Tanner Tucker each went 1-for-3. Wesley Morgan was hit by pitches twice and was walked once.

Furrow started the game and lasted three innings before yielding the mound to W. Jackson (1- 0) who got the win working the last four innings.

The Gators plated seven runs in the third inning to get win.

Last Thursday Clarke Prep opened the diamond slate by beating rival Patrician 9-7.

Chad Dickinson (1-0) got the win with five strikeouts over the first five frames. Jason Gates came on and tossed the next inning and two-thirds, fanning two. Jackson, facing a bases-loaded situation, got the save as he got the final out.

Becton went 2-for-3 with two RBI. J.D. Powell went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Furrow went 1-for- 3 with two RBI. Dickinson and Tucker each went 1-for-3.

The Gators played Sparta Tuesday and then traveled to Butler Friday to play Sumter in the Patrician Tournament at 3:30 p.m. Gators lost 7-3 to Marengo's Lady Longhorns.

Allen went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Grocholl added a hit.

Allen (0-2) shouldered the loss.

Last Thursday Clarke Prep fell 5-3 to county rival Jackson Academy in Grove Hill.

Hill, Allen and Grocholl all had one hit.

Ackerman (0-1) took the loss despite giving up just one hit and one earned run in four innings of work.

The Lady Gators opened the tourney by losing to defending state champion Tuscaloosa Academy 4-3.

Allen (0-1) got the loss as she pitched four frames, fanning six and allowing two hits.

Ackerman had a hit and an RBI. Hill also had a hit. Allen had an RBI. C. Dunagan also had a hit.

CPS played Sparta Tuesday afternoon. This Friday they travel to Butler to play Escambia in the Patrician Invitational Softball tourney at 3:30 p.m.
