Auction for Newborns

set

A Secret Safe Place for Newborns will be holding an auction this year for its second annual fundraiser. Items for the auction are now being collected. You or your business may donate to this cause, and take advantage of tax savings as all donations are tax-deductible. Donated items can be picked up or dropped off no later than Thursday, (tonight), March 8. To arrange for pick up/drop off, please call 251-275-3144 or email firstcircuitalda. org. Ask for Amy Duke or leave a message. All kinds of items are needed: gift certificates to local merchants, hunting packages, new furniture, tickets to UA or AU football games, vacation packages, dinners for two, jewelry, items for kids, cell phone service or equipment, free personal tax filing, Easter items, artwork, outdoor decor or services and other valuable items. Please mark your calendars, March 8 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Chatom Community Center.

Bake sale for Relay

The Grove Hill Baptist Church Relay for Life Team will hold a bake sale Friday, March 9 beginning at 8 a.m. in front of City Drugs. A large assortment of goods will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Relay for Life to be held Friday, April 13 in Grove Hill. If rain, the sale will be across the street at Galaxy Cable.

Community wide

cleanup

Help Keep Our Roads Beautiful by participating in a community event Saturday, March 10 at 8 a.m. when trash pick up begins. You will meet at the Rockville Baptist Church on the Rockville Road. There have been some areas in need of a spring cleaning and it is asked that you and your neighbors set aside a couple of hours that morning to help with the clean up. A coordinator will be on hand to provide trash bags and water for volunteers and to collect the filled bags.

Alabama River

Fest set

The Alabama River Festival will be Saturday, March 10 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Claiborne Lock and Dam. There will be re-enactors demonstrating how the first inhabitants of Monroe County lived in the 1700s and 1800s. You will witness what life in a typical camp site would have looked like and be able to ask the demonstrators questions, as well as join the Creek Indians in the stomp dance and in a traditional game of stick ball and dance. Visit with the Indians, frontiersmen, traders and travelers. Music, demonstrations and food, all at the only museum on the Alabama River. Bring your found artifacts and fossils. University of Alabama experts Dr. Doug Jones and Dr. Jerry Oldshure, will be on hand on Saturday to identify and answer questions. Landowner tour

The Alabama Treasure Forest Association and the Clarke County Forestry Planning Committee are hosting a Landowner Tour Saturday, March 10 north of Jackson. Topics covered will include logging practices, forest product utilization, invasive species, cost share programs, prescribe burning and an update on the new LP oriented strand board mill. Speakers include Tom Thompson, La. Pacific, Madeline Hildreth and Benji Elmore, Alabama Forestry Commission. Tour will start at 10 and lunch will be served at noon. SWAIA to meet

The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association, known as SWAIA, will hold a public meeting Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. at the Jackson Steakhouse. The guest speaker will be State Rep. Thomas Jackson, who will update the general public on legislative activities. There will also be a question and answer period. Grove Hill Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary will have a meeting Wednesday, March 28 at 9 a.m. in the conference room of Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. The guest speaker will be Dr. Eniola Fagbongbe, OB-GYN to Grove Hill Memorial Hospital and Grove Hill Healthcare, PC.

Relay for Life team

The Clarke County Courthouse Relay for Life team is currently taking orders for chicken salad sandwich plates. All proceeds will benefit the Grove Hill's annual Relay for Life. Plates are $5 each and they can be picked up beginning at 11 a.m. in the basement of the courthouse on Friday, March 31. Anyone wishing to order a plate can contact Sylvia Fuller at 275-3251, the License Commission office at 275-4141 or Maurice Dyess at 275-8156.

Infirmary Hospice Care will be holding a Relay for Life softball tournament on Saturday, March 31 at S.P. Hudson Park in Grove Hill. Local businesses and groups are encouraged to form a team and sign up for a day of fun with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Registration fee is $50. Diabetic Support Group will meet quarterly at the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. Meeting dates for 2007 are May 3, Aug. 2 and Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. Diabetes Education is offered at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital by an appointment only.
