From Our Files 90 years ago Rodgers Telephone Exchange of Grove Hill "A movement is on foot to secure a rural route beginning here and serving the territory of Clarkesville, Chilton and Peacock…The proposed route is badly needed, particularly by the people of the Clarkesville neighborhood, who are at present without satisfactory mail accommodations." "During the thunder storm of Friday night, lightning struck the steeple of the old Methodist church, now the Universalist church. The church was not seriously damaged." advertised office or business phones for $2 per month, residential phones for $1.50 a month and rural lines, owned by individuals, for 50 cents a month. "You are denying yourself one of the greatest conveniences of the age if you do not have a phone," the ad stated. Editor George Carleton had a side job, apparently: "I will shell velvet beans on Saturdays at 15c a bushel. I also have a peanut sheller for rent- G.A. Carleton."
