The dreams of clipping the nets after winning a state crown came to an end last Wednesday night for the Clarke County High School Bulldogs as they lost 54- 45 to eventual state champ Madison Academy in Birmingham.

All-tourney selection Ben Burroughs led CCHS with 15 points and five rebounds. Deforest Taite added 14 points and five rebounds. Justin Burroughs had seven points and four assists. Ronnie Osborne pulled down five rebounds.

The Bulldogs held a 39-36 lead early in the fourth quarter before Madison Academy went on an 18-11 run to finish out the period.

"We had our chances," coach Kendric Davis said. "We have been here and we are going to work hard in the off-season to get back."

CCHS pulled to within three points, 48-45, with less than a minute remaining but Madison Academy hit on 5-of-8 free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

The Bulldogs lose only Ben Burroughs from a team that won 25 games while losing just five this season.

"The chance to get back is there," Davis said. "It is going to come down to hard work and dedication from everyone in the program."

Madison Academy beat Lauderdale County 72-69 to claim back-to-back titles.
