Toddlers remain in USA Hospital
By Kathryn F. Pickard

Two toddlers who fell in a pool and nearly drowned last Thursday at a home daycare in Jackson remain at the University of South Alabama Children's and Women's Hospital in Mobile.

John Thomas Atchison, the son of Chip and Lori Atchison and Cole Hicks, the son of Robert and Tiffany Hicks, were LifeFlighted to the hospital from Jackson Medical Center. It is believed the Hicks child was in the water longer.

The Atchison child has been stabilized and was moved from the ICU earlier this week. The Hicks child remains in critical condition in the ICU.

The daycare, located on Highway 69, is in Jackson's jurisdiction. It is a certified daycare by the Alabama Department of Human Resources.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is investigating the accident at the request of the Jackson Police Department because the owner of the daycare, Nancy Overstreet, is a sister to Jackson Police Chief Charles Burge.

According to District Attorney Spence Walker, no foul play is suspected. The children somehow got through a fence that surrounded the pool and fell in.
