Walking to benefit Log-A-Load to help children's, women's hospitals

Shea Skipper, Michelle Harrigan, Kathy Harris and Jennifer McInnish pose with Mark Byal, Brent Williams and Allen Knight during their Load-A-Log for Kids walk from Mobile to Birmingham.
Three men walking 286 miles to benefit the Alabama Forestry Association's Log-A-Load for Kids benefit for the Children's Hospital in Birmingham and the Women and Children's Hospital in Mobile were joined for a distance by women from Grove Hill and Monroeville this week.

Mark Byal and Brent Williams are residents of Enterprise and Allen Knight resides in Blue Springs. All three men are employed in the forest industry.

They started their 286-mile "Miracle Miles" hike in Mobile on March 12.

The men are walking for 12 days to raise money for Children's Hospital in Birmingham and the Women and Children's Hospital in Mobile. The hike will end Friday in Birmingham.

They were joined by Shea Skipper of Grove Hill, Michelle Harrigan, Kathy Harris and Jennifer McInnish of Monroeville for a 22-mile hike from Flomaton to Brewton. The four women helped to raise about $6,300.

Since 1992, Log-A-Load for Kids has raised more than $5 million for the hospitals, making it the state's largest contributor to the Children's Miracle Network.

One hundred percent of proceeds from Log-A-Load for Kids donations go to the hospital. There are no administration fees.

Jean Ash, founder of Log-ALoad for Kids, said, "In the forestry products industry, timber is the state's most renewable resource, but our kids are our most precious resource."

Anyone wishing to make a donation can call Shea Skipper at 275-1280 or e-mail her at sskipper@tds.net.
