Try again on constitution

You have to hand it to the proponents for a new Alabama constitution, they are persistent.

Several attempts have been made in the last few years to get legislation passed that would allow Alabama voters to decide at the polls whether or not to call for a rewrite of the 1901 constitution. They have always failed but certainly not for a lack of merit.

The 1901 constitution is obsolete, cumbersome and hampers the modern day operation of state and local governments. It should be repealed.

Legislators resist any changes because they wield much power via the constitution now. Local governments can't do much of anything without going to Montgomery with hat in hand and getting enabling legislation passed first.

The group Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform has a push on again to educate voters about the pitfalls and limitations of the document. A movie has even been made and shown free in some Alabama theaters on the topic.

Legislators should let Alabamians at least vote on whether or not to call for a constitutional convention. A bill that would do that would set a referendum in conjunction with the presidential primary in February 2008.

There is no good reason not to let voters have a say.
