Scratch Ankle doing well at human age of 175!

They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks and that may be so. But an extremely old dog did very well at keeping up with much younger whippersnappers in the Canines on Parade competition Saturday, held as part of the CCARC's annual Spring Jubilee.

Scratch Ankle, a dachshund belonging to Joanne Robertson of Jackson may not have won a prize but he certainly should have - the oldest-dog-there award and possibly the oldestdog anywhere award.

Scratch Ankle, dressed in a yellow rain coat, is 25 years old.

For those who don't know, a dog year is said to equate to seven of a human's. If so, Scratch Ankle is 175 years old!

Scratch Ankle and his companion, Rascal, were featured on County Road 5 on WKRGTV last spring. Rascal died last September at the age of 24.

Scratch Ankle is like the Energizer Bunny, however, and just keeps on going- although admittedly not as fast as the famous battery-powered rabbit but at the equivalent age of 175 it is amazing how well he does get around.

Robertson said Saturday, as she told Jere Hough for County Road 5 last year, that the secret to her dogs' longevity is their diet. She says they don't eat dog food but human food, like chicken, beef, liver and such.

She said CBS has contacted her and wants to do a segment on Scratch Ankle.

Scratch Ankle appeared to be in pretty good shape Saturday but CBS probably shouldn't wait too long if it intends to feature him.
