Revive county lake talk A large cabin boat somehow ended up in the old river channel at Old Lock One earlier this week and got stuck in the mud of the shallow water. Observing the attempts to pull the boat back to deeper water were several fishermen who had put in at the Old Lock landing. Being there and seeing the fishermen got us to thinking about a proposal that has been floated several times for a dam across the old Tombigbee River channel to create a fishing lake. Proponents say it would be easy to dam the old river there and that the only landowners affected by a higher water level would be the U.S. Corps of Engineers. Looking at the old horseshoeshaped river channel, it all does seem logical. The location is just across the river from the Old St. Stephens Park and that popular facility and a lake and improved campground at the Old Lock could compliment one another. Some improvements have been made at the Old Lock and the facility is used but a lake would make it even more popular and more useable. The late Tom Deas, a longtime commissioner, pushed for the improvements that you see at the Old Lock and always wanted to see a lake developed there. The county has looked at the idea and pushed it a little but not hard enough. Maybe it is time to revisit the subject.
At the very least, a raised lake level would be an aid to hapless boaters such as those who were stranded in the shallows this week.
