GH wrecker refloats boat grounded at Old Lock 1
Ronald Dean Church of Luling, La. was traveling the Tombigbee River aboard his 37-foot Grand Banks cabin cruiser "Second Collection" Sunday when he started looking for somewhere to anchor for the night. He saw the inlet into the old river channel and took it, according to Jeremy Alford of the Alabama Marine Police. "Second Collection" draws about two and a half to three feet of water and there was barely that amount in the small channel that fishing boats use when they launch from the boat landing. When Church tried to turn the boat around, it grounded in less than a foot of water and he was- no pun intended- up the creek without a paddle. Alford was called and he arrived at the scene around 8 a.m. Monday. Buddy Hughes of Buddy's Wrecker Service in Grove Hill brought a big wrecker and backed it down the boat ramp to the water's edge. With Alford ferrying a line by boat across the old river to the grounded boat, the wrecker was able to edge it bit by bit back into deeper water. It took nearly the day to free it. Complicating the problem was the fact that the already shallow old river was even lower due to the lack of rain. A fisherman at the scene also said the water level fell four to six inches during the day Monday as efforts were being made to refloat the boat.
The tide in Mobile Bay has some affect on the river levels.
