Unusal sentences get litterbugs' attention

Clarke County has a small but dedicated and vocal group of crusanders against littering.

Clarke County Citizens Against Littering deserve commendations and support for their efforts in making citizens more aware of littering.

People must be made aware of the negatives of littering but proper punishments for those who are caught littering are also necessary.

And the proper punishment may not always be a monetary fine or even jail time.

Down in Mobile, a municipal judge has come up with some innovative ways to punish litterbugs.

After a piece of cardboard flew off of a trailer, the driver was ticketed. When he went to court he wasn't fined. Rather, Judge Whiddon ordered him to collect 200 pounds of cardboard.

A smoker probably doesn't think twice about throwing a cigarette butt on the ground. One might not make a difference but when hundreds and thousands of smokers throw hundreds and thousands of butts down, it quicky becomes a nasty mess.

Judge Whiddon's solution to one such butt flicker? He was ordered to pick up 4,000 of them and to bring them to court.

It may take some unusual punishments to get litterbugs' attention and Judge Whiddon may be on the right track.

The best thing, of course, would be not to litter in the first place.

Grove Hill is planning a community cleanup week April 14- 21. Coffeeville residents will be cleaning up their community on the 14th and Jackson folks will be doing the same on the 21st.

Statewide, April 21-28 has been proclaimed a week of cleanup by PALS (People Against A Littered State).

Please do your part to help clean up or at the very least be conscious of the litter problem during these special days.
