Old friends stepping out Businesses come and businesses go. That's just the nature of business. But we paused at the closing announcements last week of Wyman's Jewelry and Gift Shop in Grove Hill and of The Grill restaurant in Thomasville. Some institutions are just hard to give up. Vivian Gilmore has owned and operated Wyman's Jewelry and Gift Shop for 36 years. Named for her late husband, a well-known attorney, the store offered quality jewelry and gifts. Mrs. Gilmore has turned 80 and her health isn't the best and she reluctantly decided it was time to get out of the business. She has always been a champion of Grove Hill and we lament her having to cut back in community life as much as we lament the closing of Wyman's. The store will close April 28. Up in Thomasville, The Grill's last day was Saturday. Starting out as the Alabama Grill and retaining that name for years, it was the county's oldest restaurant, dating back some 67 years to 1940. Red Sims operated the Alabama Grill for many years. Most recently, Troy Stabler and Craig Wells bought it and shortened the name to what everyone called it- simply "The Grill"- and added delicious barbecue to the menu. Good lunches, sandwiches and seafood continued to be staples too. There was always someone at The Grill you knew, whether you went early in the morning or in the evening for supper. As with most small town eateries, you could always learn a bit of news at The Grill too. We understand that the property is to be sold so that a new Walgreens pharmacy can be built on the site. One is already under construction in Jackson and Walgreens seems to be expanding like Wal-Mart and Dollar General Stores into every little hamlet.
We're sure that Walgreens will have its merits but we really do lament the passing of such community landmarks as Wyman's Jewelry and The Grill.
