Sheriff initiates 24-hour patrols
By Kathryn F. Pickard

Clarke County Sheriff Bobby Moore has reinstituted 24-hour deputy patrols of the county.

In recent years, deputies did not work late night shifts in order to save money. They worked on a callout basis and in case of emergencies.

"Beginning in April we went to 24 hour shifts. The deputies work 12 hours on, 12 hours off. The county will have deputies out all day and all night. We'll see how it works," Moore said.

Moore is also making changes in the way certain crimes are dealt with.

"We are cracking down on drag racing, drugs and DUIs. If you get caught racing we will take your car. It's a lot cheaper to go to the track and do it legal. And if you get a DUI, you're going to jail, period. If you get caught with drugs you are going to jail, period.

"We're also going to have some classes here on supporting the elderly and we're going to start checking on elderly residents on a regular basis."

Moore said he is also emphasizing getting young people help at the first sign of trouble. "If it's drugs or drinking or getting in with the wrong crowd, we've got places that can help get them on the right track. And if anyone molests a child, they are going to jail, end of story," he said.
