Repeat offender gets 20 years for sexual assault of 6-year-old

A man charged with sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl decided at the last minute not to let his case go to trial Tuesday and pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in the state penitentiary as a habitual offender.

David Thomas was on probation for having committed a similar assault against another six-year-old when the incident occurred. He had served 18 months of a 10-year sentence in the earlier case.

A jury was selected for the circuit court criminal trial Monday and was seated in the jury box in the main courtroom of the Clarke County Courthouse in Grove Hill Tuesday when Judge Stuart DuBose informed jurors of Thomas' guilty plea and that there would not be a trial.

Tuesday's sentence is for 20 straight years with no parole.

The criminal jury term of Clarke County Circuit Court continues this week with many cases set on Judge DuBose's docket and Judge Tom Baxter's docket.
