69-year-old knocked in head with tire tool and robbed of $600

A local businessman was knocked out with a tire tool and robbed of $600 Saturday near his home and shop in the Mt. Zion community west of Grove Hill.

Walter Jones, 69, was working in his shop near his home Saturday morning and had made several business transactions. He was walking toward his home when he was hit in the head from behind and knocked out.

Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Vergil Chapman and Investigator Ron Baggett said an investigation led to a suspect, Winfred Daniel Kelsoe, age about 30, who also lives in the Mt. Zion area. Kelsoe was questioned and later charged with first degree robbery.

Some of the money has been recovered. Jones was treated at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital for his injury.

Kelsoe remains in the Clarke County Jail. Assisting in the case were Sgt. Maurice Dyess and Deputy Joe Allen.
