Confederates gather in Whatley
On Sunday afternoon, April 1, Clarke County's Pvt. James C. Anderson Camp 1489, Sons of Confederate Veterans held a Confederate Memorial Day observance at Horeb Baptist Church in Whatley. Original plans called for the ceremony to be held in Creighton and Bettis Cemeteries but due to inclimate weather, it was held inside the historic Horeb Baptist Church. While the ceremony paid tribute to all the South's Confederate veterans, Camp 1489 paid special honor on Sunday to James Hiram Creighton, T. A. Creighton, William (Willie) E. Creighton who are buried in the Creighton Cemetery; and William J. Bettis and David George Cammack who are interred in the Bettis Cemetery. Pictured are members of the CSA 21st Alabama Regiment. At far right is Jesse Taylor, great, great grandson of Major General Richard Taylor, CSA.
