Culverhouse needs to go State school board members should fire Interim Chancellor Renee Culverhouse. Then any of them who support her attempt to hush details about the scandal in the two-year college system should resign. Ms. Culverhouse may be blatantly encouraging state employees to break state law by withholding public records. Ms. Culverhouse, who left her post as Gadsden State Community College president, became interim chancellor when Thomas Corts abruptly resigned last month over constant criticism from the board. The press, mainly The Birmingham News, continues to uncover layers of abuse in the system and embarrass board members. Members are, no doubt, sick of hearing about more political and financial misuse of public office. Ms. Culverhouse wrote a letter to all employees last week basically telling them to shut up. "Each of us surely feels the disappointment of the constant media reports seeking to discredit our great system," she said. "The inappropriate release of such information can allow for reporting that can be harmful and detrimental to our system's employees and institutions," she said. Wagon trains pushing westward usually circled the wagons when their leaders sensed trouble. Because the board is already eardeep in trouble, Ms. Culverhouse's call seems to indicate more embarrassment is on the way for board members and, perhaps, their political cronies in the Legislature.
