Local butcher charged with delivering stolen groceries
Local restaurant owner charged with receiving stolen property
By Jim Cox

A Grove Hill butcher has been charged with stealing groceries from the store where he was employed and delivering them to a restaurant across the street and the restaurant owner has been charged with receiving stolen property.

Paul Anderson, an employee of Andrews Associated Foods, was arrested Friday on charges of theft of property, first degree, by Clarke County Sheriff's Department Investigator Ron Baggett.

Baggett said Jerry Andrews, owner of the grocery store, suspected that a large amount of groceries- meat, produce and other items- had been taken by Anderson over a period of time and delivered to the Old Democrat Deli and Bakery. Lawmen said Andrews said he never received pay for the items, estimated to be in excess of $2,500.

Tuesday, Old Democrat Deli and Bakery owner Karen Wood was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property.

Wood acknowledged Tuesday that Anderson had delivered groceries to her but said she paid him and she had receipts he gave her.

Wood said she was disappointed that Andrews did not call her to inquire about the matter before calling police. She said she could have easily purchased all of her groceries from a wholesaler but thought she was being a good supporter of Grove Hill by patronizing a fellow business as much as possible.

Anderson was often seen by many in Grove Hill crossing the courthouse square with a box on his shoulder to deliver to the deli.

Andrews, filling in as a butcher in his store's meat department Tuesday, said he would rather not comment on the situation.
