1935 water tank coming down
A demolition crew moved in Monday- surprising both Grove Hill and county officials on the opening day of criminal jury term for Circuit Court- to start taking down the water tank adjacent to the courthouse. Parking is at a premium during court sessions and the blocking of some spaces for the demolition work only made the situation worse. The tank, erected in 1935 and part of Grove Hill's first municipal water system, was still in usable condition but was deemed unnecessary because of the town's three newer tanks, including one recently erected near Grove Hill Elementary School. The tank is being cut apart and a crane will be brought in to lower the pieces to the ground. The county has said that it can utilize the space for additional parking- even though the tank spot is owned by the town.
