One piece at a time...
A big crane and a demolition crew moved in about 9 p.m. last Thursday to start dismantling the courthouse water tank. The 1935 tank was cut apart with torches and the pieces lowered one by one to the ground by the big crane. The crew worked throughout the night, finishing before daylight. Court Street in front of the Gilmore Law Office was filled with the pieces at dawn but they were all removed from the street before businesses and the courthouse opened.
The tank was removed in sections. At left, riggers tie the top of the tank to the huge crane in preparation for it to come off. At right, a welder cuts a door in the side of the tank.
The main body of the tank is hoisted free and lowered to the ground (above photos). After that, workers started working on the legs and the center fill pipe. There were no complications as the workers on the tank and crane operator worked together to dismantle the tank.
