Civil War heritage

We may be appearing to jump sides, but we will also acknowledge that April is Confederate Heritage Month and a good time to plug a brand new trail that highlights Civil War sites in Baldwin and Mobile counties.

Civil War addicts know that the two counties are a wealth of sites. The average citizen, locally as well as those who don't live in the region, may not.

The trail pinpoints 18 significant sites in the two counties...from Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan and the Battle of Mobile Bay where Union Admiral David Farragut uttered his famous "Damn the torpedoes" quote to the Battle of Blakeney and the surrender of the last major Confederate force east of the Mississippi River at Citronelle, there is plenty to see.

Civil War tourism is big business and the marking of these sites should help to attract more reenactors and fans of the era. The trail can also go a long way toward educating local citizens as to the vital role that lower Alabama played in this important era of our nation's history.

For details on the trail or to request a printed brochure, go to www.battleofmobilebay.com.
