Seismic company looking for oil under Jackson High The Clarke County Board of Education last Thurday approved a contract with Mayne & Mertz for a seismic and geophysical survey at Jackson High School during last week's meeting. "They'll be laying the cable behind the tennis courts and they'll do this during the summer so it won't interfere with school. "They're looking for oil and we hope they find it," Superintendent Gerald Stephens said. The company is mapping virtually all of Jackson in a search for oil, including residential and business areas. Superintendent's report Stephens reported most of the walls at the new Clarke County High School building have been sheetrocked. Painting is being completed in the lunchroom and brickwork on part of the building has been completed. At the new ball complex a road is being cut to go from the fields to the back of Grove Hill Elementary School. Sprinkler systems have been installed at both fields. "The whole country has been overwhelmed with grief over what happened at Virginia Tech. We have asked our principals to look over their safety plans and reminded them to be vigilant of our students and safety issues. We have teachers looking at a bullying survey. When we conducted this survey before we identified some problems and when this survey is through we'll see if we resolved those problems or if we have others," Stephens said. He told board members dress code surveys had been sent to parents and were due back last week. He reported that results so far indicated that most people wanted the dress codes enforced. Personnel Resignations or retirement was approved for Melinda McLendon, a teacher at Gillmore Elementary School; Nancy (Beth) Manchester, a teacher at Grove Hill Elementary School; Cynthia Turberville, a teacher at Jackson Middle School; Fannie Tyer, a teacher at Gillmore Elementary School; and Jackie Atchison, a teacher at Gillmore Elementary School. New employees include Jody Reeves, math teacher at Jackson High School; Kim Smith, math teacher re-employment at Clarke County High School; and Tracey Marks, secretary at Jackson Intermediate School. Retirement and re-employment was approved for Ethel Leslie as textbook coordinator. Leaves of absence were approved for Danica Jones, a teacher at Jackson High School and Jennifer Abston, a teacher at Wilson Hall Middle School. A transfer was approved for Charity Brunson, from secretary/bookkeeper at Grove Hill Elementary School to bookkeeper at Central Office. Other business Auditors with the Department of Examiners of Public Accounts told board members they had submitted an unqualified report on the school system, which meant they found nothing wrong.
The payment of bills, accounts and payroll in the amount of $2,648,149.41 was approved.
