Career Tech teachers talk with business leaders about good work skills

Clarke County Career Tech teachers met recently with local business and education leaders to discuss skills that they look for in an employee.

"Our teachers need to know exactly what employers are looking for in order to make sure that our students are prepared adequately to receive jobs when they graduate," said Sarah Miller, Career Tech Director for Clarke County Schools. "Our local businesses can help us to prepare them!"

The meeting was held as the first step in a plan put in place by an Alabama Career Technical Education grant received recently by the Clarke County Board of Education.

The purpose of the grant is to assist in forming a partnership between Career Tech and Business/Industry. Clarke County Career Tech teachers will receive onsite job professional development to enhance their understanding of the skills needed for students to be better prepared to enter the workforce. It will also provide monies for field trips so that Career Tech teachers and students can experience onsite views of different work environments and identify needed skills for entry-level positions. Grant money may also be used to purchase materials for students to assist in job preparation.

"We are excited about this opportunity to work with the local schools," said Judy Graham, Manager for Alabama Power Company. "We believe that this is a win-win situation for us and our local career tech instructors. We can help identify skills needed and have trained employee's right out of high school."
