"Two men who robbed the Leroy branch of the Washington County Sate Bank Monday morning of an estimated $7,500 remain at large, despite an intense search by lawmen- including the Clarke County SWAT team- that lasted through the day and into Monday night."

A feature story detailed the career of Harold "Nick" Carter, a Grove Hill native and athlete who was a professional boxer, semi-pro baseball pitcher and a professional wrestler in the 1940s and '50s. Carter, 77, when the interview was done, during a CCHS Old Timers Reunion, was a longtime resident of Oneonta here he was a rural mail carrier for years. He was a 1927 graduate of CCHS who went on to play football at Birmingham-Southern before Birmingham- Southern named him to its Sports Hall of Fame earlier in 1987.

The Town of Grove Hill was promoting a regional airport. Out of 13 proposed sites, one in the vicinity of Union Baptist Church seven miles south of town was considered the best. The property would accommodate a runway up to 7,000 feet. Two hundred acres was estimated as being needed but it was recommended that up to 500 be purchased if possible. The price tag for the project was estimated at $3.5 million. Nothing ever came of the proposal although Thomasville is today pushing for a regional facility, somewhere in its vicinity.

The Democrat endorsed Judge George C. Wallace for governor saying it believed him "to be a man who will direct the affairs of state with wisdom, honesty, conservatism and ability. A story detailed a proposal for a "short-cut" from the Ohio River to the Gulf of Mexico by connecting the Tennessee and Tombigbee rivers by a 20-mile canal. The canal- the Tennessee- Tombigbee Waterway- would eventually be constructed in the 1970s.

A new fire house was under construction to house the truck and other firefighting apparatus, "near the southwest corner of the jail." The project was one of the Works Project Administration (WPA).

"A party composed of B. M. Rains, Judge Coma Garrett, Jr., S. C. Gordon, Paul S. Jones and O. C. Helms motored down to Atmore and Foley Sunday to look over the Irish potato acreage of that region and to study the shipping, marketing and other phases of the industry. They returned tremendously impressed, not only with the 'spuds' industry but with the general farming methods in practice there."
