Gotcha!
Radar trailer detects, records vehicles' speeds
By Kathryn F. Pickard

Grove Hill police have been utilizing the department's new OnSite radar trailer for about a month now and according to Chief Leo Frazier they are already seeing results.

"Everybody's been slowing down. I've even been slowing down," he laughed.

The radar trailer detects a motorist's speed and displays it as the motorist passes. "A lot of people don't realize how fast they're going until they see those big numbers," Frazier said.

The trailer has been set up on various streets in town. A program allows that trailer to record how many vehicles travel along that street and how fast each ve- hicle is traveling.

"That lets us know where we need to be patrolling more. Not only does that trailer slow people down it provides us with a lot of information on the busiest streets in town," Frazier explained.

The trailer is tested every time it is moved so officers can make certain they are getting accurate readings.

"We've given everybody a chance to slow down, so now we'll start giving tickets. No one can say they didn't know they were going too fast."

Frazier said they plan to start patrolling the park area more closely. The speed limit there is 15 miles per hour and he says most people leave the park going around 30 miles per hour.

The trailer can also be outfitted with a camera, so speeding motorists may be getting caught whether an officer is in the area or not.

"There's no more excuses," Frazier laughed.
