Slayton

Mildred Christine Slayton, 95, of Jackson died April 22, 2007 at the Meadows Assisted Living Facility.

She was born Sept. 3, 1911. She was affectionately known as "Aunt Tine." She was a 1935 graduate of Auburn University. She taught school in Gainestown and Fulton before returning to Jackson. She was the bookkeeper for Slayton Oil and Recapping Company and in 1964, opened Slayton's Gift Shop which she owned and operated until her retirement in 1996. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jackson where she held the honor of being a member for the longest number of years.

Survivors include a nephew, Eddie (Linda) Slayton, Grove Hill; a niece, Janice Slayton (Perry) Douglas, Olive Branch, Miss. and other nephews and nieces; four special great-nephews, Eddie Douglas, Warner-Robbins, Ga., Carey Slayton, Jackson; Scott Slayton, Parrish, Andy Slayton, Wetumpka and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lizzie Slayton and six brothers.

The service was April 25 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Jackson with Rev. Jim DuFriend officiating. Burial was in the Pine Crest Cemetery in Jackson. Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson directed.

Active pallbearers were Harry Harrell, Jody McArdle, Carey Slayton, Jim Slayton, Scott Slayton and Larry York.
