Sports Scene
Gibson deserves a lot of praise for hard work
Ross Wood Sports Editor

I remember going to the park for games way before it ever looked anything like it does today. Back in those days home runs were only memorable if they went over the bath house at the Doc Mitchell Field. Of course back then there was only the Dixie Youth Field.

Then you had the high school field and the softball field.

Back in those days you played one team your entire time in the league, from the time you were 8-years-old until you were 12-years-old.

In my opinion it made for better ball players because you got used to playing with older, better players at an earlier age.

In those years there were constants each and every day at the park. One of those was Sonny Gibson.

He was involved in everything at the park, but especially softball. In fact I like to think he was years ahead of the area and the state when it came to the game. Those Sonny's Honeys teams were so much fun to watch.

It was something for the women to do and that in turn gave the girls something to aspire to be a part of.

If the powers that be had been able to see what the sport has become, they would have been smart and found a way to appoint him as some sort of a commissioner of the league and Grove Hill would be the hotbed for softball players.

People like him have given so much to the leagues and the youngsters who play the game. I am very proud that he finally got some recognition for his many hours and years of hard work.

The shape of the fields

It was a big shame to learn this week that the field that sits adjacent to Gibson Field, the one used by the softball teams, was deemed unsafe and unplayable.

The tragedy is that so many people have put so many volunteer hours in trying to get the fields in playing shape and then something like this happens.

If you are the parent of a player you want to try and lay the blame on someone or something.

In January of 2006 a story ran in The Democrat about the softball field and the problems with it.

At the time one of the council members was assured by the mayor that the work would be complete by the time practice started that season.

It was not. And you can not blame park director William Jackson or league president Bug Tarleton. They will do whatever it takes to get the park the way it needs to be.

At the time the field was being used by Clarke County High School's softball team.

The baseball field, also used by the CCHS team needed some work. Because William is busy with the rest of his duties it was asked about it being made so that a CCHS employee could use town equipment to work on the fields. Because of insurance concerns, a salary of $1 a month was suggested to make the user be covered by the town's insurance.

That was shot down and the statement was made by the mayor, "They need to realize we're not going to hop to it just because they say they want it done right now. If they don't like what we are doing then they can build their own field."

They have built their own fields. The work still needs to be done. Games are having to be rescheduled for the Dixie Youth teams, making a true hardship on a lot of people.

The only thing in town that seems to bring everyone together is being let to fall by the wayside. These young players are our future leaders and they will probably not forget this as they grow older.

It is a shame...a black dot on the town.

That is all folks.......
