Reuniting opportunities One hundred and sixty (or so) Mathews descendants converged on Grove Hill for a family reunion this past weekend. So, big deal, some of you may say. It was a big deal. The majority of those 160 people were not local residents. They came from as far away as North Carolina and Texas. They stayed in Clarke County motels, ate in local restaurants, bought gasoline and other products locally. It is hard to put a price tag on the revenue generated but we would venture somewhere between $25,000 and $50,000 at least. Because so many of these folks are out-of-town visitors, this reunion can rightly be termed a tourism industry. People are more interested in their roots than they have ever been and because Clarke County is such an old county, we have more descendants scattered to the four winds who are interested in local history and who have reasons to want to come here to see where great-greatgrandpa (or grandma) homesteaded and are buried. We should encourage more of these large family reunions. There are so many businesses that could benefit- motels and restaurants are the most obvious- but many others come to mind too. Someone who could specialize in offering a service for setting up an entire weekend could probably stay busy. Existing businesses need to take a critical look at the services and products offered too. Are they as good as they could be? Could they be better? Do they cast Grove Hill and the county in a good light? If any or all of the answers are no, improvement efforts should be started. With Grove Hill's retailing stagnant or even dying, it is time to think "outside of the box" as to new ways of doing business.
We thank the Mathews descendants for their business and their interest in Grove Hill and Clarke County. Come back to see us!
