Interior designer legislators

A little sprucing up of legislative offices probably isn't out of line but coming on the heels of a 62 percent pay raise, and given the excess of some of the purchases, it is enough to irk some taxpayers.

The news came out last week that several legislators, including our own Sen. Pat Lindsey, spent a good bit of money to redecorate their State House offices.

Rep. Demetrius Newton, DBirmingham, and Rep. Marcel Black, D-Tuscumbia, together spent $19,500 to redo their offices with new furniture and art.

Lindsey spent $9,824 to redecorate his office. That was the second highest of just over $39,000 spent by 10 Democratic senators. Sen. Hinton Mitchem of Union Grove, who is the senate's president pro tem, spent the most, over $14,000.

Lindsey's purchases included a nearly $3,000 sofa and a framed painting of tulips that cost $952.

Lindsey's purchases are almost laughable for anyone who has been in Lindsey's sparse Butler law office. It certainly wouldn't be considered a decorator's showplace.

We think legislators should have nice State House offices but we wonder if some of these purchases didn't go a bit overboard.
