T'ville wet-dry vote proposed for Aug. 14 Alabama Attorney General Troy King has finally issued an opinion on the petition that requested a municipal wet-dry vote in Thomasville. The matter has been on hold for months awaiting the AG's call on the matter. Dry forces had suggested the language of the municipal option bill required petition signature numbers to be based on the number of voters who voted in the last general election, instead of the last municipal election as wet forces and many city leaders though. The AG's office ruled that the law clearly says the last municipal election figures will be used. The law requires a petition containing the signatures of 25 percent of voters who participated in the last municipal election be presented to the city council to request an election. The petition presented last year exceeded the 25 percent requirement. Now, by law, the council must set a date for voters to decide the issue. The council's next meeting date is Monday, May 14. Mayor Sheldon Day said Wednesday he will ask the council on May 14 to set a date of Tuesday, Aug. 14 for a wet-dry referendum. He said he will also asked council members to pass an ordinance governing the sale and distribution of alcohol at the same time to ensure proper regulation laws are in place regardless of the outcome of the referendum.
"I place my trust in the people of our community to make a fair assessment of this issue and look forward to putting the issue to rest on Aug. 14," the mayor stated
