Former JHS principal hurt in accident
According to Jackson Police Sgt. Willie Williams, Hagood was a passenger in a 2000 Toyota Camry, driven by his wife, Joann Hagood, when it was struck by a 2000 Izuzu utility truck driven by Christopher Meeks, 20, of Sweet Water. Williams said the Hagoods were traveling north on U.S. 43 around 1 p.m., when their vehicle was hit on the passenger side by the truck driven by Meeks, who was traveling south on Highway 177. "It appears that he (Meeks) just slowed down at the intersection and failed to stop," added Williams. Robert Hagood took the brunt of the blow from Meek's vehicle, which is owned by M&M Portalets of Thomasville. The former principal, who sustained several broken ribs and damage to some of his internal organs, was extricated from the vehicle by members of the Jackson Fire Department using the Jaws of Life. He was flown to a Mobile hospital by LifeFlight helicopter where he was still awaiting surgery Wednesday morning. Due to the seriousness of Hagood's injuries, all four lanes of traffic were blocked on U.S. 43 in order for LifeFlight to land near the crash scene.
Joann Hagood was uninjured in the crash.
