Boise sheeter operation to gain new machine, eight jobs in Jackson Boise will relocate a paper sheeter operation from its converting plant in Salem, Ore. to its Jackson sheeter plant, the company announced last week. The Salem plant will be closed and the property will be sold. The addition of the Salem sheeter, called the #1 Will sheeter, to the Jackson facility will create eight new jobs initially. The equipment will be moved this summer. Miles Hewitt, Boise Paper's senior vice president and general manager, said, "Jackson and International Falls, Minn. were both considered as the new home for the #1 Will. Analysis showed Jackson to be a better strategic fit. Lower cost of operation and lower cost of installation constituted a better return on investment for the business. The #1 Will sheeter converts paper from rolls into cutsize office papers that is wrapped in reams. Jackson Mayor Richard Long, who is also a Boise employee, said, "The council and I are excited that Boise is transferring the sheeting equipment from the Salem plant to the Jackson converting facility…We have focused on assisting existing industries this year and these eight additional jobs are great news. Rick Grant, Marty Parker, Joey Blount, Trey Wilson and Ed Bahr worked closely with the city and with Debra Bolen, Clarke County economic developer, to win the transfer of the equipment to Jackson." Long said that the International Falls plant teamed with its county and state officials to bid for the operation and the choice was a tough decision for Boise to make. "We are pleased that the Boise corporate management team chose the Jackson operation," he said. Boise's Marty Parker said, "We are very excited about the sheeter coming to Jackson and the additional jobs that will be created at the converting facility. The Alabama Operations is a partner with the communities in which we work and live to enhance the quality of life for our employees and citizens."
Boise will phase out its Salem operations by the end of the third quarter of 2007. Employees on the #1 Will will not be immediately impacted by the move of the sheeter to Jackson. They will move to work on the #2 Will sheeter until it is moved. A decision on its relocation has not been made.
