Federal dollars to help improve Hwy. 43 entrance to T'ville industrial park The Clarke County Commission adopted a resolution Tuesday to use special federal dollars secured for industrial development for improvements at the Highway 43 entrance to the new South Industrial Park in Thomasville. County Engineer Sam Noble said that left and right turn lanes would be added as well as a median crossover. Federal dollars will cover 80 percent of the work to be done. An estimate was not specified. The City of Thomasville will pay the 20 percent match. Some of the federal money has already been used in Jackson. Noble said that the county has started its grass cutting of county road rights-of-way. He said there have been a few problems with the Bushhog mowers and the brush cutter is down right now for repairs. Commissioner Elma Averett asked what the county was doing about the evasive cogongrass. Noble replied that the county is working with Scotch Lumber Co. foresters and others who are combating the grass, applying herbicides and allowing others to spray rights-of-way when the grass is encountered. Averett commented that the grass is a severe problem and can literally choke out young stands of pines. Emergency Management Agency Director Roy Waite will work with Noble to develop a plan to utilize reimbursement funds for debris management in case of a hurricane or other natural disaster. Waite also said that there will be a hurricane workshop in Daphne on May 31 and that space has been allotted for 10 county officials to attend. Mayors and commissioners will be invited, Waite said. Hurricane season starts June 1. Authorization was also made to start giving the new Opine-Tallahatta Fire Dept. its share of the countywide fire tax. Will Watkins, a native of Morvin and a resident of the Thomasville Nursing Home is turning 110- years-old and will be recognized with a birthday celebration on May 10 at 2 p.m. at the nursing home. Commissioners authorized a resolution honoring her milestone. Commissioners also issued a resolution honoring all Alabama military veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Special medals will be presented to veterans at a program at the Alabama Sports Festival in Birmingham June 29. For more information go to the website www.alagames.com or call 334-239-3297.
